ARCH655 Project 1

For project one, I decided to research and learn more about the parametric design of the canopy at the Smithsonian Institution courtyard designed by Foster + Partners located in Washington DC. The priority of this project was to create a more abstract form of the canopy with the ability to create variations along with creating a simple mass and structural form for the canopy. The use of AI was implemented to create design concepts to be implemented in the grasshopper modeling.

Canopy Structure:

Final canopy structure design without the canopy paneling using grasshopper.

Mass Modeling:

For the mass modeling, I created an outline of the building to then extrude the surface                                                                     towards the z-axis with the slider.

Columns Modeling:

The column design was created using two points and using the pipe command to create the column.

Surface Modeling:

The surface model was created to make the overall parametric canopy and elevate up to the desired height of the building.

Canopy Paneling Model:

The paneling was developed starting with a surface that had the diamond node to create the paneling pattern. Then individual panels were created and scaled down to create spacing between panels to create space for the structural system(grouped in pink).
